SIA Security Guard Top-up Training

The Security Guard Top-Up Course is a mandatory refresher for SIA license renewal, providing updated skills to ensure security guards perform their duties safely and effectively.

Upon completion, learners receive a Highfield Award recognized by the SIA, enabling them to renew their Security Guard license and work across the UK in roles such as building security, construction site supervision, and shopping center protection.

Course Overview

The Security Guard Top-Up Course is now required for SIA license renewal. This course is tailored for current SIA Security Guard license holders needing to renew their credentials. It aims to equip security guards with essential skills and knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.

This short, upskilling course covers critical areas, including dynamic risk assessment and personal safety risk minimization. Since October 1, 2021, completion of this course has been mandatory for license renewal. With a valid Security Guard license, you’ll be eligible to work in various settings, including commercial buildings, office receptions, construction sites, and shopping centers.

What Does the Security Guard Top-Up Course Cover?

The course is divided into two main units:

  1. Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry
  2. Principles of Minimising Personal Risk for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry

Duration & Entry Requirements

Course Duration: One full day, from 9 am to 6:30 pm

Entry Requirements:

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for clear communication.

First Aid Requirement

Each learner must have a valid First Aid qualification. This course includes an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification, meeting SIA’s First Aid requirements.

Assessment

The Security Guard Top-Up Course is assessed through multiple-choice exams for both units, with a pass mark of 70% for each module.

Certification

Upon successful completion, learners receive the Highfield Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Top-Up) (Scotland). This SIA-recognized qualification enables candidates to apply for a renewed SIA Security Guard License, qualifying them to work as Security Guards across the UK.
